Muscovy duck

Cairina moschata f. domestica

The Muscovy duck commonly seen today is already the domesticated form of the wild Muscovy duck, which originates from Central and South America. Particularly striking are the red, wart-like skin patches on the face, which are much more pronounced in males.

Unlike many other ducks, the wild Muscovy duck is closely associated with forests and wooded wetlands. It is an excellent flyer and often perches in trees. It also preferentially builds its nests in tree hollows. Domesticated Muscovy ducks have retained many of these abilities, and lighter individuals in particular can still fly surprisingly well.
