Blue peafowl / Indian peacock

Pavo cristatus

The blue peacock is a ground dweller. But he always stays on the same place in the higher treetops during the night. Peacocks hear and see very well. Even with the smallest disturbance, they warn themselves with a loud warning call. The sexually mature peacocks wear their splendor all year round, with the exception of the moult. The feathers of the train can be up to 150 cm long. These feathers are back feathers. The short brown tail feathers become visible when the peacock turns a wheel. It is one of the oldest and best known ornamental birds that came to Europe from India around 4000 years ago. In India the peacock is the “national bird” and is not allowed to be hunted there. In Europe he was to be seen on the courtyards of the kings and emperors.
