Wood Duck

Aix sponsa

The wood duck is native to North America and, with its colourful plumage, is one of the most striking duck species. The male is particularly impressive during the breeding season, with its iridescent head and distinctive crest, while the female is much more subtly coloured.

Unlike many waterbirds, wood ducks nest in tree hollows, often several metres above the ground. Shortly after hatching, the still flightless ducklings make a spectacular leap from the nest to follow their parents to the water. They may travel distances of more than 1.5 kilometres. During this first journey, they are still nourished by the remaining yolk reserves.
