The Barbary sheep is a desert specialist native to the rocky, arid regions of North Africa. Most active during the cooler morning and late afternoon hours, it can survive for long periods without drinking, obtaining the moisture it needs from dew and water-rich plants.

Its most striking feature is the long mane along the throat and front legs. Viewed from the front, this mane makes the animal appear larger and serves as an impressive display when males confront rivals. When threatened, Barbary sheep often remain completely still rather than fleeing across the barren landscape. Their sandy-coloured coat provides excellent camouflage, allowing them to blend almost perfectly into the surrounding rocks.
