Alpine chamois

Rupicapra rupicapra

The chamois inhabits the high mountains of Europe above the tree line, descending into lower forested areas in winter. It is perfectly adapted to life on steep, rocky terrain: its hooves have a hard outer rim for a secure grip on narrow edges and a soft inner pad that acts like a rubber sole. When descending through snow, the dewclaws act as a “brake” to prevent slipping.

Unlike many other ungulates, both male and female chamois have horns. The horns of males are thicker and more strongly hooked backwards at the tips.

IUCN Red List Status – least concern, Population trend: stable
