Carp

Cyprinus carpio

Carp have a laterally flattened body with a high back, a dorsal fin and a slightly bifurcated caudal fin. There are 2 barbels by its mouth.
The spawning season in Europe lasts from May to July. Carp need a water temperature of 17 ° C for spawning. They spawn on the pond shore, in quiet rivers, in the backwater and flooded meadows.
Carp overwinter in the deeper regions of stagnant water that doesn’t freeze to the ground.

In our zoo there are 3 different species of carp:

  • Scaly carp: have lots of scales
  • Mirror carp: are bred a lot in Europe, have a very high back; the scales are slightly larger, shine metallic and are distributed irregularly on the body
  • Leather carp: have no or only very few scales
