Bactrian Camel

Camelus bactrianus

The Bactrian camel is a two-humped camel native to the steppes and semi-deserts of Central Asia. It lives in small herds whose size and composition may change depending on food availability. Its most distinctive features are its two fat-storing humps and broad, calloused foot pads instead of true hooves.

For thousands of years, Bactrian camels have been important companions to humans. As pack animals, they can travel long distances carrying heavy loads. They also provide milk, meat, wool and leather. Even their fat and dried dung are used, making them extremely versatile livestock.
