Scottish highland cattle

Bos taurus

The Scottish Highland cattle is one of the oldest and most robust cattle breeds in Europe. Its dense, double-layered coat provides excellent protection against cold and persistent rain: the long outer hair repels water, while the woolly undercoat provides such effective insulation that the animals can live outdoors all year round.

Its shaggy fringe and wide-spreading horns are unmistakable. In summer, the long hair helps protect the eyes from flies, while in winter the horns can even be used to clear snow when searching for food. Thanks to their hardy nature and calm temperament, Highland cattle are now valued worldwide for conservation grazing and landscape management.
