Himalayan tahr

Hemitragus jemlahicus

The Himalayan tahr is a robust wild goat from the steep, high-altitude regions (up to 5,000 m) of the Himalayas. It is perfectly adapted to life on rocky terrain: the hard outer rim of its hooves provides a secure grip, while the softer inner pad helps prevent slipping on smooth surfaces.

A typical characteristic of tahr is their daily migration: in the morning they graze at lower elevations before retreating to cooler, higher, rocky regions during the heat of the day. Older males have an impressive mane around the neck and shoulders, which grows into a long, thick coat in winter. During the autumn rut, males also produce a strong musky scent.

IUCN Red List Status – near threatened, Population trend: decreasing
