Domestic goat

Capra aegagrus hircus

The domestic goat is descended from the bezoar goat and is one of the oldest domesticated livestock species in the world. It has lived alongside humans for more than 10,000 years. Today, around 1,200 goat breeds are known worldwide, varying greatly in size, colour and purpose.

Goats are highly intelligent ruminants with a remarkably varied diet: in addition to grass, they also feed on leaves, bark and shrubs. Thanks to their ability to thrive on sparse vegetation and their exceptional climbing skills, goats can survive even in the most barren habitats. Today, they also play an important role in landscape management.
