Snowy Owl

The snowy owl is one of the few owl species that lives in the open, treeless tundra. It spends much of its time on the ground and nests in shallow depressions. Its white plumage provides excellent camouflage in the snow, while even its legs and feet are densely covered with feathers, providing superb insulation against the cold.

Snowy owls hunt mainly lemmings, but also prey on birds and other small animals. In years when lemmings are abundant, they can raise large broods. When prey is scarce, however, they may travel great distances in search of food.
