Leopard tortoise

Stigmochelys pardalis

It belongs to the tortoise family and lives in the tropics.

An adult panther tortoise has a highly arched dorsal shell of beige to light brown basic coloration with characteristic spots, speckles and stripes reminiscent of the fur pattern of a leopard.

Panther tortoises are cold-blooded reptiles that have to compensate for extreme seasonal and daily temperature fluctuations through appropriate behavior in order to maintain their body temperature.

They lay 5 to 30 eggs, but do not care for their brood themselves. Their clutch is incubated by the sun. They can lay 3 to 6 clutches per year.

Panther tortoises move at a maximum speed of 1 km/h.
