Great Pampas Hare / Mara

The physique is different from other species of guinea pigs.  They have long hind legs, vigilant ears and a typical rodent dentition. Maras live monogamously (one-marriage). Many pairs form a group to look after the offspring together. Females provide and feed the young, while males protect the group. They find shelter in self-burrowed caves.

Reproduction:
Gestation time around 2 months, 1 – 3 young animals per litter (fully hairy, able to see and walk). The females are only fertile for about 30 minutes every 3 to 4 months.

Large maras are hunted for their fur, other enemies are pumas, big cats, foxes and birds of prey. Due to the increasing destruction of their habitat, they are listed as “potentially endangered” on the IUCN list.

On the run, Maras reach a top speed of 75 km/h.
