Leopard tortoise

Stigmochelys pardalis

The leopard tortoise is one of the largest tortoises in Africa and inhabits open savannas and grasslands. Its striking shell pattern resembles the coat of a leopard and provides excellent camouflage among tall grasses. Just like a fingerprint, the pattern is unique to each individual.

Leopard tortoises are well adapted to dry environments and can survive for long periods without drinking, as long as they obtain enough moisture from their food. Their diet consists mainly of grasses, succulents and other plants. As they move through their habitat, they disperse seeds and therefore play an important role in the ecosystem.
