The European wolf is an endurance hunter with an excellent sense of smell and highly developed hearing. Its powerful build, long legs and dense coat allow it to thrive in a wide variety of habitats. Wolves are highly social animals that live in close-knit family groups. A pack usually consists of the breeding pair and their offspring from recent years. Working together, they can successfully hunt large prey such as roe deer, red deer and even moose.
After Austria’s last wolf was killed in the Wechsel region in 1882, the species was considered extinct in the country. It was not until 2009 that a wolf returned to Austria, and today permanent packs live in Austria once again.
