The miniature donkey is a particularly small form of the domestic donkey and originates from the Mediterranean region, where distinct miniature types developed on islands such as Sardinia, Sicily and the Balearic Islands.

Despite its small size, it has all the typical characteristics of a donkey: it is robust, sure-footed and alert. Miniature donkeys were once used mainly as pack animals in rugged, mountainous regions that were difficult to access. Today, their friendly nature and manageable size make them popular companion animals.
